Blinds
Zebra Blinds vs Roller Blinds: Which Is Better for Your Home in Surat?
Zebra blinds and roller blinds look similar when they are rolled up, but they behave very differently once they are down. Here is a plain comparison so you can pick the right one for each room.

The short answer
Choose zebra blinds when you want to switch between a clear view and privacy without raising the blind, for example in a living room or a bedroom that faces a neighbour. Choose roller blinds when you want a simple, clean look, a true blackout, or the lowest cost for several windows.
How each one works
A roller blind is one sheet of fabric on a tube. You roll it up or down and it covers the glass or it does not.
A zebra blind (also called a day-night blind) has two layers of fabric with alternating sheer and solid bands. When the bands line up, light and a view pass through. When you slide them out of alignment, the solid bands cover the sheer ones and the window is private.
Side-by-side comparison
| Point | Zebra blind | Roller blind |
|---|---|---|
| Light control | Adjustable between soft light and privacy without moving the blind | On or off; fabric choice sets how much light comes through |
| Privacy | Good when the bands are offset, but a person close to the glass may still be faintly visible with bright light behind | Complete with blackout or opaque fabric |
| Fully dark room | Not designed for it | Yes, with blackout fabric |
| Look | Layered, modern, more texture | Plain and minimal |
| Cost | Usually higher than a plain roller blind of the same size because of the two-layer fabric | Usually the lower-cost option |
| Best rooms | Living rooms, home offices, dining areas, bedrooms where blackout is not essential | Bedrooms, media rooms, kitchens, offices |

Choosing fabric matters as much as the blind type
- Blackout: blocks almost all light. Best for bedrooms and night-shift households.
- Sunscreen: cuts glare and keeps part of the outside view. Good for living rooms and offices with screens.
- Textured or printed: useful for kids rooms, pooja rooms and offices that want branding.
Think about the sun in Surat
Surat gets strong sun for much of the year, and west-facing windows take the worst of it in the afternoon. A blind reduces glare and makes the room more comfortable, but it does not stop heat entering through the glass. If heat is your main problem, read our guide to sun control window film and consider combining film with a sunscreen roller blind.
Get the measurement right
Blinds are made to size, so a few millimetres matter. Our step-by-step guide on how to measure windows for curtains and blinds explains inside and outside fitting. If you would rather not measure yourself, book a free site visit and we will measure and bring fabric samples to your home.
Our recommendation
Use roller blinds with blackout fabric in bedrooms and zebra blinds in living areas, and mix them if that suits the house. Both look good when they are measured and fitted properly, and a well-chosen fabric is worth more than the extra layer.
Maintenance and lifespan
Blinds last longer when the mechanism is not forced. Pull evenly, do not tug the bottom rail sideways, and keep children away from cords and chains. Choose cordless or motorised operation where small children live. Dust the fabric regularly with a dry soft cloth; most marks come off with a slightly damp cloth, but check the fabric supplier's care advice first. If a clutch, chain or bracket fails, it can usually be replaced without changing the whole blind.
Which room gets which blind: a quick guide
- Master bedroom: blackout roller, or curtains plus a sheer roller. Choose wide enough fabric to overlap the window frame.
- Living room: zebra blinds if you want daytime softness; sheer curtains for a layered look.
- Kitchen: a wipeable roller fabric or faux-wood blind, away from direct heat and splashes.
- Home office: sunscreen roller to cut screen glare while keeping the view.
- Kids room: printed roller blinds, cordless or motorised, fitted out of reach.
Mistakes to avoid
- Buying a sample shade from a small photograph. Colour changes between a screen and your room, so look at the fabric in your own light.
- Choosing zebra blinds expecting complete darkness.
- Measuring once, by eye. Measure at three points and write the smallest figure.
- Ignoring the mechanism. Ask which chain, clutch or motor is used and how a part would be replaced.
What affects the quotation
For blinds the price depends on the type, fabric, number of windows, window size, the mechanism (manual, cordless or motorised) and installation conditions such as high windows. For an exact figure we measure, show samples and give you a written quotation.

Frequently asked questions
Are zebra blinds good for bedrooms?
They give flexible privacy and soft light, but a zebra blind is not a blackout blind. If you need a very dark room for sleeping, a blackout roller fabric is the better choice. Light can also leak around the edges of any blind, so measuring the window correctly matters.
Which is easier to clean, zebra or roller blinds?
Both are low-maintenance. Dust them regularly with a soft cloth or a brush attachment, and spot-clean marks as the fabric supplier advises. A single-layer roller blind has fewer surfaces to dust.
Can zebra and roller blinds be motorised?
Yes. Both types can be supplied with motorised operation and remote control, which is useful for wide or high windows.
Do blinds reduce heat in the room?
Blinds help cut glare and some heat, but they work inside the room after the sun has already come through the glass. For west-facing glass, sun control film on the window is usually combined with blinds for a better result.
