Choosing Curtain Fabrics for Surat's Heat and Monsoon Humidity
Surat has strong sun for much of the year and a humid monsoon. A curtain that looks good in a shop may fade, trap damp or be hard to care for at home. These tips help you choose fabric that suits both seasons.

Start with what the room needs
- Bedroom: a lined or blackout curtain for sleep, with a sheer for daytime.
- Living room: sheers with heavier side panels for a layered look.
- Kitchen-facing windows: washable fabrics or a blind instead of a curtain.
- Balcony doors: sheers that let in light and move easily when the door is used.
Common fabric families
| Fabric | Good for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Cotton and cotton blends | Everyday rooms, easy care, natural look | May shrink or crease; can fade in strong sun |
| Polyester and blends | Quick drying, holds colour, many designs | Quality varies; check the weight and feel |
| Linen look | Relaxed, textured look | Creases; ask about care |
| Velvet | Formal rooms, good light blocking | Heavy; needs a strong rod; can feel warm |
| Sheers | Soft daylight and privacy | Dust shows; wash gently |
Monsoon care
High humidity can leave fabric slightly damp and encourage mildew spots. Open windows when you can, keep curtains from touching wet window sills, dry them thoroughly after washing and follow the care label. Washable fabrics are easier to look after through the season.
Sun and fading
UV light fades colour. A lining protects the face fabric, and a sheer behind the main curtain reduces direct exposure. For rooms with strong afternoon sun, consider sun control film too.
Rods, tracks and fullness
Heavy fabric needs a strong rod or track with enough brackets. Curtains hang best when the fabric is much wider than the window. See our guide to measuring windows for width and length tips.
What affects the quotation
The price depends on fabric, lining, style, width and length, the rod or track and installation conditions. We measure, show samples and quote in writing.
Layering works well in Surat
A two-layer system gives you flexibility: a sheer for the day, and a heavier or lined curtain for evenings and strong sun. In summer, close the heavier layer on sun-facing windows during the hottest hours; in the evening, open it and keep the sheer. You can change the combination as seasons change.
How to choose lining
- No lining: light and airy, but the face fabric fades faster and light passes through.
- Standard lining: adds body and protects the fabric from the sun.
- Blackout lining: blocks most light for bedrooms and media rooms. It also adds weight, so check the rod and brackets.
Styles and what suits them
- Eyelet: simple, modern, slides easily on a rod.
- Pinch-pleat: a formal tailored look; needs more fabric width.
- Tab-top or rod pocket: relaxed, usually for lighter fabrics.
- Roman style: see blinds if you want a neat look at the window. Compare zebra and roller blinds.
Common mistakes
- Choosing a pattern from a small swatch. Look at a larger sample in the room.
- Hanging curtains too low or too narrow so the window looks smaller.
- Forgetting that heavy curtains need strong brackets into a solid wall.
- Washing a fabric that is labelled dry clean only.
- Letting damp curtains stay bunched up in the monsoon.
Care routine
- Dust curtains lightly every few weeks.
- Wash or dry-clean as the label says, and dry fully before rehanging.
- In humid weather, open windows when you can and keep fabric away from wet sills.
- Replace worn hooks and glides when you rehang.

Frequently asked questions
Which curtain fabric is best for monsoon humidity?
Fabrics that dry quickly and wash easily, such as cotton blends and many polyesters, cope well. Avoid leaving heavy fabrics damp, and keep rooms ventilated.
Do curtains fade in strong sun?
Yes, over time, especially on west-facing windows. A lining, a sheer layer and sun control film on the glass can reduce fading.
Should curtains touch the floor?
Many people prefer them just clear of the floor, which keeps hems out of dust and splashes. Choose the length at the site visit.
